RSS feeds allow individuals to subscribe to receive updates of new content from websites with changing content, such as news websites and weblogs. It is a technology that is generally offered free-of-charge in order to facilitate syndication of web-based content.
When you subscribe to an RSS feed, updates are automatically delivered to your computer in XML format, which is displayed by specialized software known as a news aggregator, or a web browser that has the same capability. The information is typically displayed in a list format with a titles and a line or two of content, which is linked back to the whole article. This allows subscribers to track new content from a wide variety of sources.
The abbreviation RSS refers to the following standards:
- Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91)
- RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)
- Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0.0)
