Proponents of expanding federal hate crimes legislation to include gays and lesbians should convince the public that such an expansion would solve a real, not a made-up, problem; clarify that this legislation is about physical action against gays and lesbians, not personal thoughts or religious beliefs; and demonstrate that expanding the Hate Crimes law means progress for America.
